You may not have thought about it yet but your helmet is one of the most important things in your life! Not only does it protect you and insulate you against the weather, it is perhaps the only thing that will save your life if, god forbid, you ever get into an accident. You might have bought the safest helmet in India, but to ensure that the helmet does its job you can’t miss out regular maintenance and keep it clean and scratch free.
Here is an easy and step by step guide to keep your helmet clean and maintain its qualities for a long time to come.
The visor on your helmet protects your eyes and face against dust, bugs and road debris. Accidents can happen if any of these get into your eyes when you are on your two-wheeler. The role of the visor is very important and if it has a lot of scratches on it, the visibility usually goes down especially in dark conditions and more so when you have oncoming traffic with bright light shining on your face. It is important to replace the visor of your helmet periodically. You can do that by visiting any bike accessories shop near you, or do it yourself at home by purchasing authentic visors from an authorised bike accessories shop near you.
If you use a lot of hair products, it mixes with the sweat and dust and creates a gunk that smells over time. It also makes the helmet unhygienic. Ideally, you must do a deep cleansing of your road motorbike helmets every three to four months. Helmets come with two different configurations of inner lining & pads. Some of them are completely removable while there are others that cannot be removed. If it can be removed, the cleaning process is very easy. Just take the pads and lining out of your helmet soak them into a solution of baby shampoo for about 30 minutes. Clean it with water and let it dry normally under the sun. If the inner lining and pads cannot be removed, then dip the entire helmet in a big bucket of foam created using baby shampoo. Allow the helmet to soak in for at least 15 to 20 minutes and then using your fingers remove the grime gently. Wash it under clean water once again and allow it to dry normally under the sun.
in most good quality road motorbike helmets, The straps are made to last a lifetime. However in certain cases if you happen to damage the strap, it can be replaced with a new one. To do that you might have to go to your nearest bike accessories shop, or if you are handy with tools you can do that yourself at home. Purchase an automatic helmet strap from any motorcycle accessories shop near you and replace the old one with the new strap. While doing that, make sure that the strap is removable, in case it is not removable then it is highly advised that you get in touch with the authorised helmet shop for help.
PRO TIP: Helmets with damaged straps are a safety hazard. If the strap has become extensively damaged do not take any risk, invest in a new road motorbike helmet immediately.
To upkeep the look and feel of your road motorbike helmet you can wash the exterior shell of the helmet with a baby shampoo solution and a soft sponge or piece of cotton cloth to gently remove dead bugs, dust and grime. It is always a good idea to soak the helmet in soap solution to dislodge any dust and grime from the surface which makes it easy to clean it later. Once the helmet is dry after cleaning, polish it with a high quality car wax to make it shine like new! Remember, do not polish your helmet if it comes with a matte finish.
Apart from these deep cleansing routines that you must do at least once a month, make sure to clean your helmet once or twice every week. Use a wet cotton cloth to gently remove the dust from the visor. You can also purchase deodorizing sprays that you can use to keep your helmet smelling fresh.
